Why Are Power Consumption and Thermal Management Important in Industrial Computers?
An industrial computer's power consumption affects its energy cost, cooling requirement and system design. A significant portion of the electrical energy a computer consumes is converted into heat. Power consumption and thermal management should therefore be evaluated together.
Low-power computers can offer an advantage in confined spaces or in applications where energy efficiency is important. On the other hand, applications requiring higher processing power may need more energy and more advanced cooling.
Points to consider in power consumption and thermal management:
- Power consumption of the processor and other components
- The computer's energy needs at typical and maximum load
- Capacity and stability of the power supply
- Fan-cooled or fanless cooling design
- Temperature and airflow inside the cabinet
- Continuous operating time
The processor's TDP value can give an idea about power and cooling design; however, it does not directly show the computer's total energy consumption. Memory, storage, expansion cards and other components also affect total consumption.
The best choice is to determine a system that provides the required performance and can be cooled reliably in the real operating environment.
