Can an Industrial PC Run 24/7?
Many industrial PCs are designed for applications that require long-term or uninterrupted operation. However, it cannot be said that every industrial computer is suitable for uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Reliability in continuous operation depends on the characteristics of the processor and other components, the cooling design, ambient temperature, the power supply and software stability.
What should you consider when choosing a computer for 24/7 operation?
- The manufacturer's continuous operation and operating temperature information
- Cooling capacity under long-term processing load
- The SSD's write endurance and the expected amount of data written
- Stability of the power supply
- Operating system and application stability
- Remote monitoring, maintenance and recovery options in case of failure
In critical applications requiring uninterrupted operation, measures such as backup, power protection and the ability to restart the system should also be considered.
A computer being suitable for 24/7 operation does not mean it will never fail. The level of continuity the application requires should be addressed in the system architecture together with product selection.
