What Is the Difference Between IP Protection Rating and IK Impact Resistance?
IP and IK codes are classifications that express a device's resistance to different external influences. However, the properties they measure are different.
The IP (Ingress Protection) code indicates the level of protection against solid foreign objects and water.
The IK code expresses the level of resistance of the device's enclosure to mechanical impacts.
For example, a device with IP65 protection is protected against dust ingress and withstands water jets under the conditions specified in the standard. A classification such as IK08 indicates the level of a mechanical impact test carried out according to a specific standard.
These two properties are not interchangeable. A computer may be protected against water and dust but may not show the same level of resistance to strong mechanical impacts.
What should you consider when choosing?
- The required IP level for dust and water
- Whether there is a risk of impact
- Which part of the device was tested
- Whether the protection applies to the entire device or only to the front panel
- The manufacturer's test standard and statements
Especially when choosing an industrial monitor or Panel PC, it should be remembered that IP protection may apply only to the front face. It should not be assumed that the entire device has the same protection level.
