How Are Fanless Computers Cooled?

Fanless computers are computers that do not use a mechanical fan for cooling. In these systems, the heat generated by the processor and other electronic components is usually transferred to the surroundings through a specially designed metal enclosure, heat-sink surfaces and heat-conducting elements.

Not using a fan reduces moving parts and eliminates fan noise. It can also reduce the risks posed by dust that a fan might draw in.

However, a fanless design also has its own limitations. The computer's cooling capacity depends on the enclosure design, ambient temperature, airflow and processor load. If cooling is insufficient, the system may reduce its performance to keep component temperatures under control.

What should you consider when choosing a fanless PC?

  • The processor's power consumption and performance requirement
  • The operating temperature stated by the manufacturer
  • Whether there will be a continuous high processing load
  • Mounting orientation and airflow around the enclosure
  • Dusty environment and cleaning conditions

Fanless computers are advantageous for many automation and data acquisition applications. However, it should not be assumed that every application requiring high performance can run on a fanless computer.
