Should You Use a CPU or a GPU for Machine Learning?

In machine learning applications, the CPU and GPU offer advantages in different tasks. The right choice depends on the type of model to be run, the amount of data and the expected processing speed.

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a general-purpose processor. It is used to manage different types of tasks, run the operating system, process data and coordinate many applications. Some machine learning models can run with sufficient performance on the CPU.

The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is designed to run many operations in parallel. This can offer an advantage especially in workloads such as deep learning, image processing and large matrix computations. However, not every AI application benefits from a GPU to the same extent.

The following criteria should be evaluated when deciding:

  • Model type: It should be checked whether the model is optimized for the CPU, GPU or another accelerator.
  • Processing speed: How many operations or images per second the application must process should be determined.
  • Memory: System RAM and GPU memory must meet the requirements of the model and data.
  • Software compatibility: The AI framework, drivers and acceleration libraries used must support the chosen hardware.
  • Power and cooling: GPUs may require more power and cooling capacity under heavy load.
  • Total cost: Hardware cost, energy consumption, maintenance and expected performance should be evaluated together.

The CPU and GPU do not have to be direct alternatives to each other. In many systems, the CPU manages general tasks while the GPU accelerates specific computations. In suitable applications, special AI accelerators such as an NPU can also be considered.

Conclusion: Whether to use a CPU or a GPU for machine learning should not be determined by technical specifications alone. The choice should be made through performance tests with the real application software and total system requirements.
