How to Choose an Industrial PC for SCADA Applications?

SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is the general name for systems that enable industrial processes to be monitored and controlled centrally and operational data to be collected. It is widely used in energy, water and wastewater management, production facilities and infrastructure applications.

SCADA systems can have different needs, from a simple monitoring station to comprehensive systems that collect data from many devices and record historical data. Computer selection should therefore not be based solely on processor speed.

First, the requirements of the SCADA software to be used and the system architecture should be determined. Will the computer run only the operator interface, or will it also take on data logging, alarm management, reporting or other services? These questions directly affect the hardware need.

The following criteria should be considered when choosing:

  • Processor performance: The requirements of the applications running at the same time and the amount of data processed should be met.
  • RAM capacity: The total memory needs of the SCADA software, database and other applications should be calculated.
  • Storage: If data logging and retrospective analysis will be done, capacity, write performance and data reliability should be evaluated.
  • Connectivity: There should be sufficient connections for PLCs, remote I/O systems, network devices and other control systems.
  • System continuity: If the impact of an interruption is high, backup, data protection and the time to bring the system back into service should be planned.
  • Cybersecurity: Operating system support, security updates and network access policies should be taken into account.

A SCADA server and an operator computer do not have to have the same hardware requirements. In large or critical systems, it may be more appropriate to distribute these tasks across separate computers or servers.

Conclusion: The right industrial PC for SCADA applications should be chosen according to the system's scale, software requirements, data processing needs and tolerance for interruption.
