How to Choose an Industrial PC for HMI Applications?

HMI (Human Machine Interface) is the human-machine interface that lets operators monitor and control a machine or production process. HMI applications display information such as temperature, pressure, speed and production status and pass operator commands to the system.

When choosing an industrial PC for HMI applications, first examine the system requirements of the HMI software to be used. Processor performance, RAM capacity, storage space and operating system compatibility are the basic criteria in this selection.

While lower hardware requirements may be sufficient for a simple operator panel, HMI applications with many screens, heavy graphics or that run alongside other software may require a more powerful computer.

The following criteria should be evaluated when choosing:

  • Processor and RAM: The HMI software's requirements and the applications that will run at the same time should be taken into account.
  • Display: Screen size, resolution, touch-use requirement and the operator's working conditions should be determined.
  • Connections: The Ethernet, USB or serial ports needed to communicate with PLCs, sensors, control devices and other systems should be checked.
  • Mounting: If mounting inside a cabinet is required, a Panel PC or suitable mounting options should be considered.
  • Operating conditions: Temperature, dust, vibration and the need for continuous operation should be taken into account.

Conclusion: In HMI applications, instead of choosing the most expensive computer, a system that is compatible with the software to be used, provides sufficient performance and suits the operating environment should be preferred.
