What Is an Industrial Monitor?

An industrial monitor is a display designed to present images in production lines, machine control systems and industrial automation applications. It does not have to be a full computer on its own; it usually receives its image from an external computer, a Box PC or the control system.

Industrial monitors can be used in machine operator panels, production monitoring stations, control rooms and kiosk systems. Depending on the model, they may offer features such as a touch screen, front panel protection, different mounting options and a wide operating temperature range.

What should you consider when choosing an industrial monitor?

  • Screen size and resolution
  • Brightness and readability under light
  • Touch screen requirement
  • Video connections such as HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA
  • Panel mounting, VESA mounting or other mounting options
  • Dust, water and temperature conditions

The key distinction is this: a monitor displays the image, while a Box PC takes on the task of computing and running software. If both functions need to be combined in a single device, a Panel PC can be considered.
