What Do Processor Core Count and GHz Mean?

Processor core count and GHz are two important characteristics that help in understanding a computer's processing capacity. However, on their own they do not determine processor performance.

A core is the physical processing unit of a processor that can execute instructions. Depending on the software's structure, multiple cores can allow different tasks to run at the same time. For example, core count can become important in industrial systems where several applications run simultaneously.

GHz (gigahertz) refers to the processor's clock frequency. 1 GHz corresponds to one billion clock cycles per second. However, a processor with a higher GHz value is not always faster. Processor architecture, per-core performance, cache and power limits also affect the result.

When choosing an industrial PC, instead of looking only at core count or GHz, the processor's overall performance and the requirements of the software to be used should be evaluated together.

Example: While a mid-range processor may be sufficient for a simple HMI application, systems that run image processing, data analysis and several programs at the same time may require higher processing capacity.
